(Antwerp 1601–1678) Wide landscape with travellers on a forest road, oil on panel, 32 x 46 cm, framed,
Provenance: Vienna private collection.
Certificate: Dr. Klaus Ertz (15 Oct. 2009). Dr. Ertz on the condition of our painting: “The condition of this painting can be said to be excellent. The colours make a brilliant and luminous impression and are typical of the 1640s. The paint layers, applied on top of each other in the glazing technique, are well preserved, particularly in the figures and the foliage, and convey the peculiar impression of a three-dimensional picture surface that is typical of Flemish panels.“ Dr. Ertz compares our painting with the following works by Jan Brueghel the Younger: 1. Road near a Forest, Prado, Madrid (late 1620s); 2. Landscape with Travellers and a Bittern Hunter, art market, Paris (late 1620s); 3. Vast Landscape with Travellers, ex Galerie St. Lucas, Vienna (before the 1640s); 4. Field Path, Hermitage, St Petersburg (before the 1640s). Dr. Ertz about the dating: „The comparative examples date from before 1640. The present painting is related to them in terms of composition and subject matter, but in my opinion has to be dated to the 1640s, due to the much more painterly brushwork and the more cursory treatment of detail. The present painting clearly shows that Jan Brueghel the Younger was on his way to independence, which he had pursued from the mid-1630s on. Only the composition is still reminiscent of his father (comp. Jan Brueghel the Elder, Vast Landscape with a Covered Wagon and Travellers, 2007 in the Richard Green Gallery, London).
